In journeying through the Lord’s Prayer with Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas as our guides, we have discovered that this prayer is not merely a collection of petitions but a divinely designed school of desire. As Saint Thomas teaches in the Summa Theologica, the Lord’s Prayer contains “everything we should desire” and presents these desires “in the proper order,” thereby forming not only our petitions but our very hearts.
We begin by seeking God Himself—His glory and His Kingdom—before requesting the means to attain our end through grace, obedience, and sustenance. Only then do we address the obstacles of sin, temptation, and evil that hinder our journey.
Prayer is fundamentally the exercise of rightly ordered desire, expanding our hearts to receive what God already wishes to give. By persistently praying these seven petitions, we are gradually transformed as our desires are purified and enlarged. Each petition asks something of God and also aligns our souls with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and leads us toward the blessedness promised in the Beatitudes. When prayed with understanding and devotion, the Lord’s Prayer becomes the pattern for all prayer—and for life itself—teaching us to desire what God desires for us, thus bringing our will into perfect harmony with His.
As we conclude our reflections on Jesus’ perfect prayer, remember that growth in prayer is itself a grace. Through the Lord’s Prayer, we are drawn into the interior life of the Trinity—addressing the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. We pray not as isolated individuals but as members of Christ’s Mystical Body, united with the saints in heaven and our brothers and sisters on earth.
The transformation of our desires unfolds not in a single moment but throughout our earthly pilgrimage as we repeatedly turn to this prayer with renewed faith and devotion. In the words of Augustine:
“His gifts are very great, but we are small and straitened in our capacity of receiving. Wherefore it is said to us: ‘Be enlarged, not bearing the yoke along with unbelievers.’ For, in proportion to the simplicity of our faith, the firmness of our hope, and the ardour of our desire, will we more largely receive of that which is immensely great” (Letter to Proba 8.17).
May the Lord’s Prayer continue to expand our souls and direct our lives toward the infinite God, who alone can satisfy our deepest longings.

Prayerful Reflection on the Lord’s Prayer
Most holy Father, the Father of all who are Your children, You revealed Yourself to our forefather Moses by declaring that Your name is “I AM WHO AM.” From You, Father, Your eternal Son is begotten before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God. Together with Your Son and the Holy Spirit, You are the eternal and unchanging Being, the God Who Was, Who Is, and Who Is to Come. From all eternity, all things came to be through Your Son, and without Him, nothing was made that has been made. You are the Beginning and the End, the source of all life.
When You sent Your Son into the world, to be conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, His divinity united with humanity, bridging the gap created by sin. Through, with, and in Your divine Son, we are made Your adopted children by grace, crying out that You are our Abba, Father!
Throughout the centuries, You gradually prepared Your people to know You not just as Creator and Lord, but as their loving Father. Through covenants and commandments, You formed us to receive the fullness of Your revelation in Christ Jesus.
Now we dare to address You as “Our Father,” acknowledging that we belong not just to ourselves but to the entire Body of Christ—to all our brothers and sisters throughout the world, in Heaven, and in Purgatory. Free me from individualism and division, that I might pray for all Your children, even those who do not yet know You.
Father of ours, the One in the Heavens, You dwell both in transcendent glory and within the hearts of Your faithful. Make my soul Your heavenly dwelling place. Transform my desires to seek only what pleases You, that every petition I offer might truly express the longing of hearts conformed to Yours.
Help me to approach You with childlike trust and dependence, abandoning myself to Your Providence. May the words “Our Father, Who art in Heaven” reshape my very identity as Your beloved child who longs for the day when I, and all Your children, will see You face to face in the fullness of Your Beatific Vision.
Hallowed be Thy Name—Father, Most Holy and Eternal God, I cry out with the souls of all Your saints—Your children and my brothers and sisters in Christ: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, Who was, Who is, and Who is to come!”
Thy Kingdom come—Father of ours, may Your Name, Your Essence, Your Eternal Being be honored, praised, loved, and adored now and forever. May Christ Your Son—in Whom the fullness of Your Kingdom dwells—continuously come to earth, into the souls of all Your children, in anticipation of His final coming when every knee shall bow before His Kingship and the New Heavens and New Earth are brought to fulfillment.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven—May that glorious Kingdom be built now on earth through perfect obedience to Your will, as it is in Heaven, in the souls of the angels and saints who gaze upon Your Beatific Vision. Make my soul, the souls of all my brothers and sisters on earth, and those in Purgatory, vessels of Your radiance, glory, and mercy.
Give us this day our daily bread—Father, Most Holy, Your glory is most magnified in our souls through the precious gift of the Holy Sacrifice of Your Eternal Son—most perfectly perpetuated and bestowed through the Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist. Conform me and all Your children to the image of Your Son through our worthy and active participation in that Sacrifice, the foretaste of Heaven. In that Sacrament, and through Your loving providence, grant us the daily sustenance we need—both spiritual and material—to glorify You and fulfill Your mission.
Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us—By Your Divine Mercy, forgive me of every sin, purify me, reconcile with me, and make me a beacon of Your Mercy for others. Annihilate all bitterness and resentment in my soul, replacing them with Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, for You are Holy, Holy, Holy. Conform me to that perfection and use me to reveal it to the world.
Father Most Holy, You are adored in Heaven and glorified on earth in all who do Your will. As we pray the first five petitions of the prayer Your Son taught us, we are drawn beyond ourselves—to the heights of worship, surrender, trust, and mercy. These petitions purify the heart and conform the soul to Your image. But we remain in this world—vulnerable, weak, and surrounded by temptation.
Lead us not into temptation—Father of ours, Most Holy and Glorious God, lead us, Your children, safely through every temptation, affliction, and trial that You, in Your wisdom and perfect love, permit for our sanctification. Give us a clear understanding of every trial and temptation so that we can discern Your will, which exposes every deception. Free us from oppressive thoughts and strengthen our weakness. Shield us from all that would overwhelm us, and grant us the strength of Your divine Son, that we may joyfully and wholeheartedly endure every trial we face now and until the day when all trials will cease.
But deliver us from evil—Father of ours, the One in the Heavens, protect us from the evil one, who attacks us and desires our eternal damnation. Protect us, Your beloved sons and daughters, with Your Fatherly care. When You do permit the trials of the evil one, I know that it is for my good and the good of all Your children. With the whole Church, in those moments, I cry out for deliverance, trusting in Your power to save us from all that threatens our salvation.
For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours now and forever—Holy, Holy, Holy are You, Lord God the Almighty, Who is, Who was, and Who is to come. To You alone belongs all sovereignty, might, and majesty. May Your Kingdom come in its fullness, Your power be manifest in our weakness, and Your glory shine through us now and forever. A Litany on the Lord’s Prayer: Worshiping the Thrice-Holy God
Father of ours, the One dwelling in the Heavens:

- By Your mercy, forgive every sin that stains our souls.
