In Heaven, we will be in awe of the holiness of the countless men and women who served God and others with selflessness and self-sacrifice throughout their lives. Among the countless saints in Heaven are a few who are chosen by God to become canonized and added to the liturgical calendar of the Church on Earth. These holy men and women are given to us as models for every day and age so as to inspire us on our journey of faith.
Below is the General Roman Calendar with additional feasts particular to the United States. May these holy men and women inspire you as you daily seek to live the will of God in your own life. Saints of God, pray for us!
The text of the Liturgical celebrations below are formatted as follows:
- Solemnity
- Feast
- Obligatory Memorial or Commemoration
- Optional Memorial
- “All Saints for Today” is used when there is no saint or feast on the Church’s universal liturgical calendar. The link on “All Saints for today” takes you to various lesser known saints whose days are not required celebrations.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (#355) clarifies how memorials are celebrated during certain days of Advent, Christmas and Lent:
- On the weekdays of Advent from December 17 to December 24, on days within the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord, and on the weekdays of Lent, except Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week, the Mass texts for the current liturgical day are used; but the Collect may be taken from a Memorial which happens to be inscribed in the General Calendar for that day, except on Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week. On weekdays of Easter Time, Memorials of Saints may rightly be celebrated in full.
- On weekdays of Advent before December 17, on weekdays of Christmas Time from January 2, and on weekdays of Easter Time, one of the following may be chosen: either the Mass of the weekday, or the Mass of the Saint or of one of the Saints whose Memorial is observed, or the Mass of any Saint inscribed in the Martyrology for that day.
- On weekdays in Ordinary Time, there may be chosen either the Mass of the weekday, or the Mass of an Optional Memorial which happens to occur on that day, or the Mass of any Saint inscribed in the Martyrology for that day, or a Mass for Various Needs, or a Votive Mass.
