Holy Week Prayers from the Eastern Rite Catholic Church

“The life of all was nailed to the Cross,

the immortal Lord was numbered among the dead.

He is our Savior who rose on the third day,

raising Adam from corruption.

The heavenly powers cry aloud to you, O Giver of Life:

Glory to your Resurrection!

Glory to your condescension,

O Lover of Mankind!”

From Byzantine Matins for Thursday in Thomas Week

“You properly planted the seeds of the commandments of God.

You devoutly distributed all your riches to the poor.

In place of them you acquired the glory of Christ, O most glorious one.

Then, full of hope and through lengthy suffering,

you struggled along the course.

You shared the passion and resurrection

of the One who is beyond all suffering.

Now that you dwell with him in the kingdom, pray for us.”

From the Matins for St George, the Great Martyr

Troparion — Tone 2

The Noble Joseph,

when he had taken down Your most pure Body from the tree,

wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it with spices,

and placed it in a new tomb.

But You rose on the third day, O Lord,

granting the world great mercy.

Troparion — Tone 2

The angel came to the Myrrh Bearing women at the tomb and said:

Myrrh is meet for the dead;

but Christ has shown Himself a stranger to corruption!

So proclaim: The Lord is risen,

granting the world great mercy!

Kontakion — Tone 2

You commanded the Myrrh Bearers to rejoice, O Christ!

By Your Resurrection, You stopped the lamentation of Eve, the first mother!

You commanded them to preach to Your apostles*: The Savior is Risen from the tomb!
